The Torsion & Twist tool sets up NVGate for you when you measure torsional vibration with a toothed wheel or an encoder on the Ext Sync inputs.

It finds by itself the number of pulses per revolution and the missing teeth of your wheel, tells you if the signal is good, and writes the right settings into NVGate. No need to count teeth or to try settings by hand.

Beta version — this tool is provided free of charge and delivered "as is", without warranty of any kind. Check the settings it writes before an important measurement. Your remarks are welcome: customer.care@oros.com

Tested with NVGate V18.

What you need

  • A PC with NVGate open, in connected mode (the tool talks to NVGate by itself).
  • An OROS analyzer with Ext Sync inputs, and the NVGate torsional option to measure torsion.
  • A wheel sensor (toothed wheel, encoder, tape...) connected to Ext Sync 1 and/or Ext Sync 2.

Install

  1. Unzip the downloaded file anywhere (for example on the desktop).
  2. Double-click Torsion_Twist.exe. Nothing else to install.
  3. Optional: double-click install_to_nvgate.bat once. The tool then also appears in NVGate under Automation > Execute.

When the tool starts, the badge at the top right shows NVGate online in green: it is connected.

Case 1 — The machine is running: AUTO SETUP

Use the Online tab.

TorsionTwist Online.png

  1. Start the machine (constant speed or run-up).
  2. In the table, tick Torsional for each Ext Sync input you use.
  3. Click AUTO SETUP. A small window shows 4 steps:
    • search the pulses (trigger level),
    • count the teeth and the gap (3 seconds of signal),
    • write the settings into NVGate,
    • check the torsion measured by NVGate.
  4. At the end you read Settings written and checked. NVGate is ready: press Run.

STOP stops at any time; your previous settings are then put back.

If the wheel has no missing tooth, the tool cannot guess its number of pulses: a red row Pulses/rev, no gap appears. Type the number, or use Count pulses (see below), then click AUTO SETUP again.

Case 2 — You already have a recording

Use the Measurement tab (picture at the top of this page). NVGate does not even need to be open to look at the result.

  1. On the left, the list shows your NVGate measurements that contain Ext Sync signals.
  2. Click a measurement: in a second the table shows, for each Ext Sync input, the pulses per revolution, the missing teeth, the speed and the Signal quality.
  3. Click APPLY to write these settings into NVGate.
  4. Or click Post-analysis to replay the recording in NVGate with the right torsion settings.

Your recordings are only read, never modified.

Reading the result

Row What it tells you
Pulses/rev / Missing teeth Your wheel, as found by the tool (60 and 2 = a 60-2 wheel). "NVGate now: ..." means NVGate is set differently: APPLY corrects it.
Angular speed The shaft speed, in rpm.
Signal quality Green OK: the signal is clean. Red: the reason is written in the cell (move the mouse on it for details).
Torsion check Green OK: the torsion computed by NVGate matches the pulses.

Count pulses (wheel without missing tooth)

From a recording (Measurement tab): click Count pulses and say where the speed comes from — a speed you type, another wheel of the recording, or a tach input of the recording.

On the machine (Online tab): open Autotach & count pulses, click Count pulses and choose:

  • I have the speed: the machine turns at a known speed (typed, or given by another wheel or a tach). The tool computes the pulses per revolution.
  • I don't know the speed: turn the rotor one full turn by hand, slowly, then click STOP. The tool shows the number of pulses counted.

The result goes into the Pulses/rev, no gap row; then use APPLY or AUTO SETUP.

Twist & Torque

Use this tab when two wheels are on the same shaft (one at each end).

TorsionTwist Twist.png

  • Twist 1 ON: NVGate computes the angle between the two wheels. While NVGate runs, its mean value (DC) and its Pk-Pk are shown.
  • Torque coef. calculator: type the shaft diameters, the distance between the sensors and the material; Apply to Twist 1 gives you the torque instead of the angle.
  • Reset DC: sets the mean twist to zero (the analyzer stops; press Run again).

Good to know

  • Options (top right): the tool can also add the speed of each input and its speed profile in your NVGate layout.
  • Very slow machines: below about 60 rpm the tool says "speed too low".
  • The short recordings made by AUTO SETUP are deleted afterwards: nothing is left in your project.
  • The Log Window at the bottom explains each step and any problem.
  • Do not change NVGate settings by hand while AUTO SETUP is running.
  • More details: the README.txt file delivered with the tool.
